Joint European Master on Tribology of Surfaces and Interfaces - TRIBOS

Year 2

(Award available for year: Master of Science)

Learning outcomes

On completion of the year 2 students should have provided evidence of being able:
- to identify the tribological problem, analyse possible solutions, propose the routes and write clear proposals to achieve the required goals;
- to demonstrate ability to develop theoretical and experimental routes of study to solve tribological problems
- to integrate multidisciplinary requirements into a coherent solution combining the knowledge from different fields related to tribology
- to work on and interpret the experimental techniques and results to solve tribological problems, such as tribometers, microscopes, spectroscopes, profilometers, etc
- to take a proactive and self-reflective role in working and to develop professional relationships with others;
- proactively to formulate ideas and hypotheses and to develop, implement and execute plans by which to evaluate these;
- critically and creatively to evaluate current trends, research and advanced scholarship in the field of tribology.

Transferable (key) skills

Masters (Taught) students will have had the opportunity to acquire the following abilities as defined in the modules specified for the programme:
- the skills necessary to undertake a higher research degree and/or for employment in a higher capacity in industry or area of professional practice;
- evaluating their own achievement and that of others;
- to use contemporary IT techniques for fast and efficient communication and information sharing;
- self direction and effective decision making in complex and unpredictable situations;
- independent learning and the ability to work in a way which ensures continuing professional development;

Assessment

Achievement for the degree of Master (taught programme) will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year 2 and will involve the achievement of the students in:
- drawing on a range of perspectives on material or lubrication aspects of tribology;
- evaluating and criticising received opinion;
- effective use of research-informed literature
- make reasoned judgements whilst understanding the limitations on judgements made in the absence of complete data
