Year 1

Learning outcomes

On completion of the programme students should have begun to develop:

- a use of written and spoken academic language to suit a clear communicative purpose through a coherent, accurate and fluent range of appropriate lexical and grammatical structures;
- an awareness of subject specific genre, discourse and function; making appropriate language choices in relation to audience and purpose at whole text, paragraph and sentence level;
- an ability to follow subject specific academic conventions in both spoken and written tasks, such as referencing, synthesising sources and their own argument, meeting task requirements and building collaborative understanding;
- a critical approach to their own work and the work of others through use of a range of appropriate sources to develop an argument with a clear position;
- an ability to critically reflect on their own learning and demonstrate awareness of resources and techniques they could employ to continue their own development;
- an ability to communicate an awareness of the cultural and ethical issues of academic study within their field.

Transferable (key) skills

By the end of the programme, students will have had the opportunity to acquire:

- the skills necessary to be able to critically reflect on their own learning and demonstrate awareness of resources and techniques they could employ to continue their own development;
- the ability to work effectively with others on an academic task within their field.

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year/programme and will include:

- demonstrating competencies in the language, skills, knowledge and understanding required of a student who is about to enter postgraduate level study;
- performing effectively in the academic environment of a University through integrated assessments covering all four skills (speaking, writing, reading and listening) required of a SELT.
