Learning outcomes
On completion of the year students should have provided evidence of being able to: Philosophy LOs 1) Recognise the formal structures underlying valid argumentation 2) Demonstrate a basic knowledge of philosophy within some of the main areas of the discipline, such as epistemology, ethics, metaphysics, or history of philosophy 3) Demonstrate a basic knowledge of the nature of philosophical thought and methodology English Literature LOs 4) Demonstrate an awareness of the basic concepts, information, practical competencies and techniques which are standard features of English studies 5) Demonstrate a basic knowledge of critical terminology used in English studies 6) Demonstrate knowledge of English literature from a range of literary periods and locations 7) Demonstrate awareness of the importance of the literary, cultural and socio-historical contexts in which literature is written and read 8) Demonstrate basic knowledge of the varieties of language and forms Joint LOs Use basic generic and subject-specific qualities, in both disciplines 9) Present a structured and coherent simple argument 10) Apply critical skills and analytical skills
Transferable (key) skills
a) Students will have had the opportunity to gain experience and feedback with respect to written communication skills, problem solving, the assessment of arguments, and the construction and defence of their own view. They will use IT systems comprehensively to engage with teaching and assessment on their modules. b) Students will have had the opportunity to reflect on their personal responsibility skills – learning to learn, self-management, and awareness of individual strengths and weaknesses.
Assessment
Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year and will include: - Demonstrating the knowledge and application of standard concepts, information and techniques relevant to the study of English Literature - Demonstrating some knowledge of English Literature - Demonstrating knowledge and application of standard philosophical concepts, theories and methodology - Demonstrating a basic understanding of some of the main areas of philosophy (typically epistemology, ethics, metaphysics, and selected major philosophical thinkers) - Demonstrating emerging philosophical abilities, skills and competencies (to articulate and defend their own view, and apply key tools of philosophical analysis) - Demonstrating the ability to construct a coherent, simple argument
