Learning outcomes

By the end of the programme students should have provided evidence of being able to:

Philosophy LOs

1) Engage in independent philosophical analysis and construction of arguments

2) Understand and critically engage with the writings of some major philosophers in contemporary theory or the history of philosophy

3) Apply their knowledge of philosophical concepts, theories and arguments to a focused range of topics in which they can demonstrate advanced understanding and analysis

4) Identify and reflect on the presuppositions of specific disciplines and practices, such as art, politics, the sciences, or analytic philosophy itself, as part of more focused study

5) Engage in informed reflection on their own lives and/or the world around them

English LOs

6) Demonstrate a coherent and detailed command of the key concepts, information, practical competencies and techniques which constitute English studies

7) Demonstrate a skilled knowledge of generic and subject-specific qualities; I.e.,

- present a structured and coherent argument

- have detailed knowledge of critical terminology

- have a sound knowledge of the varieties of language and forms

8) Demonstrate an advanced knowledge of how to apply concepts of the structure and history of English to the analysis of texts

9) Develop and deploy dynamically and self-consciously a range of critical skills

10) Develop and deploy dynamically and self-consciously a range of analytical skills

11) Demonstrate a command of the English language via an engagement with literary materials

Joint LOs

12) Engage in independent research and apply an advanced understanding of concepts and methodologies in either discipline to their own views

Transferable (key) skills

a) Qualities and transferable skills necessary for employment (Advanced communication skills, both written and verbal; Problem solving; Teamwork; Independent Research; Text interpretation and analysis; Ability to synthesise information from multiple sources; Ability to assess arguments; Ability to construct and defend their own view; Ability to work independently; Use of IT);

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the modules specified for the year and will include:

- research based learning

- the knowledge and application of concepts, information and techniques relevant to the study of English Literature

- knowledge of English Literature

- the ability to construct a sophisticated argument relating to the study of English Literature

- the ability to be critical of scholarly work in English Literature

- ability to apply the skills of argument analysis and philosophical methodology to their own philosophical view and that of others

- ability to specialise and so attain a more advanced understanding of, and critical engagement with, a focused range of concepts, theories, arguments, topics or writers in philosophy

- ability to reflect upon the implications of philosophy for their own lives and the world around them

- ability for in-depth, independent research in Philosophy or English Literature
