Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme, students should have provided evidence of being able to:

Demonstrate a familiarity with the basic concepts, information, practical competencies of the disciplines of the social and political science as well as the beginnings of an understanding of how these can be applied to social life

Begin to develop a sense of criticality through engagement with relevant primary texts and the debates around them;

Be able to present their own/others’ academic arguments both to their peers and teachers using both digital and analogue means;

Evaluate different types of data and begin to develop the skills needed to find relevant data when required;

The beginnings of what is required to write in academic style. This includes but is not limited to referencing and academic integrity.

In level 1, you will have opportunities to develop your academic literacy through practising underpinning skills such as critical thinking (with an emphasis upon critical reading), time management, active learning, reflection, and communication. You will also develop skills and behaviours relating to academic integrity and referencing through class activities and module assessments. This will support you in understanding and applying the main theories, concepts and studies in the field of social and political sciences.

Your professional literacy will be developed through exposure to teamwork/collaboration opportunities, information searching and problem-solving skills with regular opportunities to reflect on/practice/assess your developing skills so that you are a successful student and can confidently transition into your second year.

You will learn new ways of developing your digital literacy in order to support your studies and future life. You will access a range of digital tools to support your work, enabling you to confidently develop appropriate skills and behaviours such as assessing, accessing and communicating information and data. You will also practise how to safely engage in digital learning and development through both workshop/seminars and module assessment activities.

Assessment

1. Demonstrating the knowledge and application of standard concepts, information and techniques relevant to the discipline;

2. Work that covers a restricted area of the disciplines;

3. Demonstrating emerging abilities, skills and competencies especially with regards to critical reading.
