MA English Literature(Part-Time)

Year 1

Learning outcomes

As a student on an MA programme within the School of English, you will develop your knowledge and abilities in a range of areas. By the conclusion of the MA, you will be able to:

1. demonstrate in-depth, specialist knowledge and advanced techniques relevant to the discipline and/or to demonstrate a sophisticated understanding of concepts, information and techniques at the forefront of the discipline;

2. exhibit high levels of skill in the exercise of generic and subject-specific intellectual abilities;

3. demonstrate a strong understanding of techniques applicable to your own research or advanced scholarship;

4. take a proactive and self-reflective role in working and in developing professional relationships with others;

5. formulate ideas and hypotheses, and develop, implement and execute plans to investigate and evaluate these;

6. evaluate critically and creatively current issues, research and advanced scholarship in the discipline;

7. research, organise and complete pieces of assessed written work attached to the modules chosen, and an extended research project at the end of the MA programme.

In addition, you will develop specific skills on the MA English Literature; including:

8. your awareness and understanding of past and ongoing critical debates in the field of English Literature;

9. the development of your own knowledge, understanding and ideas regarding English Literature;

10. the ability to curate a specialised or wide-range curriculum, based around your choice of option modules available;

11. identifying central issues relating to the individual module topics

12. Developing and refining a research project / dissertation topic from the wide field of study available to you.

On completion of the programme you will have demonstrated your abilities and knowledge in the follow ways:

13. showing an appropriate and informed appreciation of various strands, genres, major authors and movements in the areas of English Literature most relevant to your (emerging) specialised interests.

14. demonstrating an awareness of established and emergent preoccupations and issues in approaching English Literature, and literary studies more broadly

15. having a reflective understanding of relationships between the different modular components of the MA programme

16.Undertaking and completing the research, preparation and dissemination of assessed work within the chosen modules, and for the extended research project on a topic of your choosing (12,000-word dissertation, or an approved equivalent format).

Transferable (key) skills

Masters (Taught), Postgraduate Diploma & Postgraduate Certificate students will have had the opportunity to acquire the following abilities as defined in the modules specified for the programme:

- the skills necessary to undertake a higher research degree and/or for employment in a higher capacity;

- evaluation of their own achievement and that of others;

- self-direction and effective decision making

- independent learning and the ability to work in a way which ensures continuing professional development;

- to engage critically in the development of professional/disciplinary boundaries and norms.

Assessment

You will be appraised on your achievement in your ability to:

- demonstrate the ability to apply breadth and/or depth of knowledge to a complex specialist area;

- draw on a range of perspectives on an area of study;

- evaluate received opinion;

- identify and use relevant evidence in the investigation of a question or problem

- show appropriate caution in making judgements and interpretations, in accordance with the available evidence.

Assessments require the development and implementation of knowledge and skills that are relevant to wider academic and professional domains. Assessments are designed to be inclusive and accommodating for students’ diverse needs and learning styles.

Achievement for the Postgraduate Diploma and Postgraduate Certificate will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the programme.

Each module has its own assessment points, typically comprising one or two summative assessments with additional provision for formative feedback. The assessment map is provided on the Excel template.
