Learning outcomes

On completion of the year/programme students should have provided evidence of being able to: 




Understand complex concepts and apply to various problems relevant to the biomedical sciences within the context of, for example, regenerative medicine, tissue engineering, drug discovery, cancer biology or dementia.

Explain in detail integration of complex concepts and appreciate the investigative techniques with reference to published literature.

Apply experimental, technical and research competencies required within the biomedical sciences.

Design experiments to effectively test a hypothesis

Create solutions to UN Sustainable Development Goals relevant to the biomedical sciences and demonstrate the ability to collaborate in disciplinary and interdisciplinary team environments, contributing positively and flexibly to the team’s outputs.

Communicate scientific and other information effectively to a range of audiences and in a variety of formats.

Explain the importance of equality, diversity and inclusion in both disciplinary and societal contexts, including how historical events have shaped disciplinary thinking and cultures.

Demonstrate a threshold level of data science skills, including programming, relevant to working with data in the biomedical sciences.

Complete and reflect on workplace tasks and activities undertaken in employment in the biomedical sciences and appraise the benefits to future graduate employment.

Develop an entrepreneurial mind-set by creating innovative solutions to real-world problems relevant to the biomedical sciences.

Transferable (key) skills

In year 2, you will develop, practice, and be assessed on academic literacies such as critical thinking, academic writing, use of appropriate academic language, and information searching. You will have opportunities to develop problem-solving competencies through different learning activities and you will develop and practice presentation/communication competencies. You will be introduced to a variety of sustainability challenges and to ways of understanding these, drawing on different framings and core definitions. 

You will have opportunities to develop professional competencies such as creativity and problem-solving through individual and collaborative learning activities, and will refine competencies of teamwork, negotiation and collaboration. You will be given opportunities to reflect on the ways in which your professional competencies are developing. 

You will make choices about the most appropriate digital tools to use in your work and will critically evaluate their application in a range of contexts. Working creatively/communicating effectively with digital tools will also be assessed. 

Assessment

Achievement will be assessed by a variety of methods in accordance with the learning outcomes of the programme and modules specified for the year/programme and will include: 

Demonstrating the ability to apply a broad range of core concepts of the discipline to complex challenges and simple, and novel, instances; 
Work that is often descriptive in nature but drawing on a wide variety of material; 

Demonstrating basic professional competencies relevant to biomedical sciences; 
The ability to evaluate and criticise received opinion; 

Integrating knowledge and understanding across the discipline.

It will encompass a range of both formative and summative assessment at both module and programme level.
