Objectives
Learning outcomes
At the end of the course students should have a sound grasp of the techniques used to achieve the genetic transformation of bacteria, fungi, plants and animals, and the uses to which these and other molecular biology techniques are being put in the agricultural, medical and commercial fields.
Their understanding will be assessed during the course, in the 'Genetics Debates' and after the submission of an assessed essay. At the end of the course they will sit an examination which tests both their general knowledge base and their comprehension of selected subjects.
Skills outcomes
The “Genetics Debates” provide experience in team-working, presentation and logical argument in support of a proposition related to current issues of public concern surrounding genetic manipulation and genetic technologies in general.
Syllabus
Topics covered:
- Plant breeding and plant genetic manipulation.
- Advanced aspects of in vitro DNA manipulation and protein engineering.
- Genetic engineering of micro-organisms for pharmaceutical production.
- Gene therapy for inherited disorders.
- Ethical and biohazard aspects of genetic manipulation.
