Objectives

This module aims to provide students with the knowledge and skills to design, plan, implement and evaluate a significant health change project in their workplace, developing knowledge and skills in complex and changing workplace environments.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
- Critically evaluate the conceptual and methodological strengths and limitations of a number of approaches to research and make an informed choice of research approach for their own project
- Design a research methodology, including an appropriate monitoring and evaluation strategy
- Implement a planned project in the workplace, applying appropriate analytical techniques to data generated
- Produce a project report which evaluates the success of the project and brings a critical perspective to both the planning and implementation of the project, and which indicates the short-term and longer-term benefits of the project to the student’s own organisation
- Lead effective change in health services

Upon completion of this module students will be able to:

Syllabus

Indicative content
- Techniques for Project Planning and management
- Introduction to Research Skills in the workplace (including data review and synthesis skills)
- Report writing and academic conventions
- Performance Metrics and Evaluation Techniques
- Designing Health Change projects
The project must relate to the topic of the qualification which the student is undertaking. For example, if this is part of the PG Cert in Co-Producing Health the project must relate to co-production. The student will also be expected to utilise the advice and support of a workplace mentor appointed by the employing organisation.
Students will be expected to use a learning log to demonstrate learning generated from their own work place practices and observations of others.
In addition self-directed action learning sets will take place throughout any programme including this module.

Private study

258 hours of private study:
- 40 hours preparing for taught sessions;
- 28 hours working in learning sets researching; and
- 190 hours researching and writing assessed coursework

Online support to facilitate independent learning will be given to the students through the University VLE which will provide 8 x 1hour tutorial Q&A sessions with tutor, additional reading, links to sources of research and national policy, module powerpoint presentations and reading lists. These tutorials could either be synchronous or asynchronous.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

The nature of the cohort and the method of delivery of the module will allow enhanced monitoring of progress in the classroom through interactive debate and dialogue case studies and other scenario-based activities. Formative feedback will also be given on draft assignments before summative assessment. Outside of the workshops, as well as regular email communication, students will be encouraged to utilise the VLE for group discussions (which will be monitored), questions to the tutor and for feedback.

We expect up to 10 hours to be allocated per student in terms of monitoring and supervision and prep time for tutorials.
