- face the linguistic, intellectual and psychological challenges of living in another country;
- acquire a deeper knowledge and appreciation of the target culture;
- develop the social/persona/transferable skills necessary for gaining maximum benefit from living in a different community;
- seek to enhance their future employability by familiarizing themselves, when appropriate, with the world of work within the target culture, or by reflecting on the utility of skills that they are acquiring while living abroad for their future employment.

Learning outcomes
Students who spend the year in Italy should be able to:
- communicate fluently and appropriately, demonstrating a high degree of grammatical accuracy in Italian
- consolidate and extend knowledge and understanding of complex structures and registers of Italian
- demonstrate sophisticated receptive and productive skills, in a variety of contexts
- demonstrate an awareness and understanding of Italian culture and society

Skills outcomes
Students will be able to:
- use language creatively and communicate information and ideas
- demonstrate self-reliance and adaptability in developing an awareness and understanding of a culture other than their own
- exercise personal responsibility and decision making

Syllabus

Due to the varied opportunities for the year abroad, the syllabus will differ from student to student. Students should make themselves familiar with the requirements for the year abroad as laid out in departmental Year Abroad specifications and in the Learning Agreement. These documents are dispensed at the year abroad meetings (level 2) and also available online.

Students at a university must take modules equal to 25-30 ECTS credits over the 2 semesters, and pass at least 15 credits (details are specified in the Learning Agreement). Students on work placement or assistantship must provide a satisfactory report from their employer at the end of the year.

In addition, all students must complete (in Italian):
- Questionnaire (1) (end of December);
- 1 x 1500 word essay on La mai permanenza in Italia (end of April);
- Language portfolio for YA students (End of May).
