Module summary

The module provides students with an overview of the Law of the Internal Market. Particular attention is given to the question of how the European Court of Justice (ECJ) goes about its business of balancing free trade objectives with non-economic concerns. The European bodel is a balanced compromise, accomodating both a market economy and a developed welfare state.

Objectives

By the end of the module, students should be able to understand the history of the Single European Market and its current state of development, the topical issues relating to it and the debate over its future.

Syllabus

1) The History of the Single Market and the four economic freedoms
2) The current state of development
3) Application of the freedoms in relation to intellectual property rights
4) Topical issues: enlargement, the social charter, external relations
5) The EU and the WTO: the way ahead.
