Module summary
This module provides the student with the opportunity to develop an understanding of one of our European partners and the different socio-cultural, economic and political issues which affect the health of that population along with the development of the health system and to compare this to the UK. Students undertake a two week observational placement in healthcare provision linked with the host institution.Objectives
On completion of this module students will able to:- analyse the value of sharing and exchanging multi-cultural knowledge and experience;
- debate learning experiences with colleagues;
- gain understanding of and empathy for being a 'stranger' within another country;
- undertake an analysis of healthcare provision within a European Country;
- analyse how different nursing cultures define the nurses role.
Learning outcomes
- To develop students' understanding of the concept of culture
- To develop the students' understanding of European and professional cultural issues that will promote and enhance healthcare by individuals practising in a range of settings.
- To enable students to recognise the international dimension of professional nursing knowledge and healthcare
- To develop the students' awareness, understanding and acceptance of cultural differences.
- To develop the students' awareness of and respect for clients' individual cultures
- To develop the students' understanding of the influence of historical, philosophical, ethical, economic, political and professional factors on their own and others' professional culture.
Syllabus
Cultural awareness of European countries - healthcare, economical, political, social, political influences; European culture in its unity and diversity; attitudes, values with regard to nursing within own country and European countries; role within another country - 'stranger'; observation of nurse's role - concepts of caring, nursing diagnosis, theory models; critical analysis - evaluation of health care; professional development - reflection; self management.
The intention is that students spend two weeks abroad during this module.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Group reflective tutorials. Prior to the visit, the tutorial/group discussions focuses on planning for the visit. Following the visit, the first tutorial/group discussion explores health outcomes and expectation in relation to health systems in the country visited link to the UK and NHS; the second post-visit tutorial/group discussion focuses on analysis of the above rather than description to inform the assignment. Each student is required to contribute to the discussions.Methods of assessment
