Module summary

In this module, students will acquire: a detailed knowledge of the causes and events of the German Student Movement in the 1960s, enabling them to assess the immediate impact of this movement on German society; and overview of literary responses to the movement through a study of selected texts; an ability to assess the long-term impact of the movement in the areas of social conventions and political participation, the green movement and the peace movement of the 1980s; an ability to interpret and evaluate a significant period in Germany post-war history and to research a designated topic for effective presentation, both verbally and in writingThe first semester is intended to introduce students to the German Student Movement through a historical survey of causes and events. The second semester will concentrate on the immediate and long-term literary, social and political impact of the movement. Semester 1: the historical background; the situation at Universities; the global connection; the Vietnam war; the unacknowledged past; critical theory; the APO; demonstrations in Berlin; the Springer press; the Social-Liberal coalition. Semester 2: alienation and Notstandsgesetze; the RAF; literary responses; Berufsverbote; the birth of the Green movement; the crisis of the Left; myth and reality.The module will be conducted entirely in German.

Objectives

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Monitoring of progress is by weekly group presentations and seminar discussion in both semesters (with meetings of module leader and students before and after the presentation) and the Semester 1 essay.
