- Completion of 120 Level 2 credits or equivalent
- Theory and Practice Module 5; assessed clinical placement and clinical hours
- Dependent on length of placement some student may also need to identify and agree an appropriate theoretical module to be undertaken in the host country.

Module summary

Objectives

The overall aim of the module is to widen the student’s perception and experience of health care which is important with the increasing globalisation of healthcare and in terms of employability. This will be achieved by exploring the health needs of communities/client groups of a foreign country and analysing how these needs are met through legislation, policy and service organisation and delivery during a 12 week placement in the chosen country. This constitutes experience not normally available in the UK. The student will then be able to draw comparisons between the UK and their chosen country as well as identify innovations in practice which could be usefully adopted here.

Additionally the international placement will provide the student with an opportunity to develop personal and professional skills required for independent study which are essential for healthcare professionals. The student will also have an opportunity for peer learning. This module complies with the Erasmus/Socrates schemes.

The practice undertaken aboard will constitute part of the student's assessed practice requirements and may also, depending on length of placement, constitute part of the assessed theory requirements for their programme via the co-requisite modules, and the regulations re pass/fail of practice placements will apply, as indicated within the co-requisite module.

In addition, all placements will need to be organised through the International Lead for the School to ensure the placement meets the following criteria:
- The student has agreement from the Programme Manager to undertake the module
- The student must have successfully completed all level 2 work
- Academic support or equivalent from a linked educational establishment in the intended country
- Students language skills (relevant for host country) are at a level to enable them to undertake a clinical placement by the time placement in the host country begins (NB Erasmus /Socrates monies available to undertake intensive language course prior to placement)
- All student experiences must be in environments that are recognised, and have been approved, by the linked educational establishment
- The 12 week period in placement outside the UK complies with the requirements of the student's UK professional/regulatory body in terms of registration criteria
- The student has an agreed learning contract with the module manager and International lead for the School and the appropriate person in the chosen country.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students will:

- Analyse their experience of a health care system outside the UK in relation to the students chosen profession/client group.
- Critically analyse the health needs of other communities /client groups outside UK
- Evaluate the service provision available to meet the needs of the community/client group
- Demonstrate development personal and professional skills evidenced by the ability to study independently
- Undertake agreed theoretical module to meet programme outcomes (dependent on the length of visit). This may be by undertaking module(s) at host University/School of Nursing or by undertaking modules from own programme via distance learning.
- Undertake an assessed practice placement within host country. Placement area must be agreed and enable to the student to complete the required practice outcomes relevant for their programme requirements.
