Objectives
On completion of this module, students should:- have an understanding of the main philosophical ideas and theories relevant to research ethics;
- be sensitised to the kinds of ethical problems raised when conducting research;
- be able to reason, construct convincing arguments and defend their point of view both orally and in writing using the relevant philosophical ideas and theories;
- have developed some independence of thought.
Syllabus
This module will comprise of a series of lectures and seminars; the lectures will provide an introduction to the main ideas, concepts and theories relevant to research ethics, whilst the seminars will offer the students an opportunity to actively engage with the materials, using interactive teaching methods and encouraging discussion. The topics to be covered include; informed consent, autonomy, the goals of research, professional codes of ethics, research on embryos, research on animals.
