Objectives
This course will introduce you to University life, the Dental Institute and the dental profession. These intensive, first few weeks of the programme are crucial to the whole experience of being a dental student. They will set the scene for the next five years and introduce students to the environment in which, and the people with whom they will work. Students will be introduced to methods of learning suited to university life and in continuing education. Issues of ethics, professionalism and communication skills relevant to clinical dentistry will be raised at this very early stage. Many sessions will be jointly taught with students from the Schools of Hygiene and Therapy and Dental Technology.
The foundations of knowledge of dental science will be laid by observation of oral and dental disease / treatment in both dental hospital and general practice settings, supported by an observational aid ("I-Spy" book). These observations will be used to explore understanding of the scope of associated science, professionalism, team-working and communication. Communication skills will also be explored. Also interwoven in this course will be sessions relating to study skills and student welfare.
