Module summary
This notional course encompasses the clinical aspects of the various elements of year one. It provides entry to the central core of clinical experience which is to be developed throughout the programme, ultimately leading to competence as a graduating dental surgeon. Students will be exposed to the clinical environment from the earliest stages of the programme where they will be able to apply basic skills of communication, examination and diagnosis.In addition, experience will be gained in the core areas of basic life support, infection control, local anaesthesia and impression materials. The course will provide an opportunity to work with and support other members of the dental team. Further experience, for example in relation to the role of health promotion, will be gained in outreach settings.Objectives
On completion of this course, students should be able to:- record and evaluate information acquired from a patient;
- chart teeth, disclose plaque and use basic periodontal indices;
- record bitewing, periapical radiographs of patients and evaluate these radiographs for evidence of periodontal disease and caries;
- record and evaluate impressions and models of the dentate patient;
- describe morphological features of the permanent dentition;
- perform basic infection control procedures and be able to apply these in the clinical environment;
- demonstrate basic life support skills;
- administer local anaesthetic safely in a closely supervised situation;
- perform dental nursing procedures sufficient to provide assistance to fellow students (both dental and hygiene / therapy);
- recognise and have gained experience in the role of health promotion in the community.
Syllabus
- Exposure to clinical environment (equivalent to one half day per week).
- Simulated basic life support and administration of essential first aid.
- Infection control in the clinical setting,
- Administration of local anaesthesia to live patients under close supervision.
- Use and application of dental impression materials.
- Opportunity to work with and support other members of the dental team.
