Objectives

On completion of this module, students should be able to ...
To introduce the scope of the MChD programme
To increase students’ understanding and ability to manage learning approaches in Higher Education
To enable students to identify their own learning styles and manage their independent study
To encourage reflection and embed this in students’ practice
To raise awareness of the importance of ethics and professionalism in dentistry
To develop key observation skills in clinical settings
To introduce team working in dentistry and to experience joint teaching with other programmes
To develop group-working skills and the ability to effectively present their work
To maximise students’ use of Leeds for Life and the personal tutoring system
To ensure competency in VLE and other IT resources
To introduce the key ethical issues of consent and confidentiality

Learning outcomes
On completion of this course students should be able to:
Reflect on their progress through the first year of the programme
In simple terms, evaluate their strengths and weaknesses
Be aware of their personality type and preferred learning style
Describe, at a basic level, how memory works
Effectively observe in clinical environments
Research and describe some of the effects of disease on the individual and research and describe a range of dental treatments.
Appreciate the nature of the dentist-patient relationship and demonstrate a basic understanding of verbal and non-verbal communication skills
Demonstrate understanding of the interdependence of clinical skills and science
Understand the theory and practice of team working
Understand the roles of some members of the dental team
Demonstrate understanding of the importance of ethics in dentistry
Demonstrate good knowledge of the GDC requirements on Student Fitness to Practice

Introduction to the LDI and staff groups Many sessions are taught in conjunction with the whole dental team Library and information literacy including plagiarism (Turnitin) Lectures, workshops, seminars, tutorials, e-lectures, self-directed learning Visits to LDI clinics Visits to dental practices Group working Group presentations Student tutor meetings Aspects of study skills Individual and group assignments Consent and confidentiality workshops

Group work = 30 hrs Group work is important in the programme as a whole and this module embeds group work into all aspects of the module, not just the group assignment. Examples of this are; meetings to discuss the approach to the first formative assignmnet, followed by peer marking of the formative assignment, formal peer review sessions and follow up of these.

The 3 summative assignments are compensatable. The written elements should be spaced out through the year with the two reflective reports due in October and November, memory and learning essay in term 2 with the group presentation being as late as possible in the exam period in June. The first summative assignment has a tight word count in order to assess the skills of writing succinctly, whilst the second has greater scope for writing more deeply and in greater breadth. In line with other modules in year 1 the three summative elements are compensatable. The group presentation is expected to be of a high standard, involving all group members, using multimedia and/or live elements and will not be a simple PowerPoint aided lecture If students do not attend personal tutor meetings, these may be rearranged before the end of the year. Persistent non-attendance will be a barrier to progress. If a student misses the workshops due to illness or other authorised absence, they will be required to submit a written assignment
