Module summary
This is a part-time module for professionals working in the addiction field whose work brings them into contact with childbearing drug users, and professionals working with pregnant women and mothers of young babies whose work brings them into contact with substance misuse problems.Objectives
Core Requirements: in meeting the general requirements the student must:- evaluate the effectiveness of their practice using a relevant knowledge base, including an understanding of legal and policy contexts and appropriate research.
- demonstrate an explicit adherence to their own professional values and to the provision of ethically sound practice.
Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the module you will be able to: -
- critically appraise the effects of drugs and alcohol on the foetus, the neonate and in childbirth
- critically analyse the legal implications of substance use during pregnancy and in parenthood
- examine and apply safeguarding children issues in relation to childbearing substance misusers
- assess risk to pregnant mothers the foetus, and the neonate
- critically assess information on the effects and complications of substances on the foetus, the pregnancy, the neonate, the child, the parents and family and other services involved in their care.
- critically evaluate the evidence for the effective care and management of pregnant drug users.
- advice and support for the pregnant substance user
- assessment (stages of change, risks of harm, family functioning, parenting skills)
- information sharing with services for child bearing drug users

Syllabus
Within this module the following topics will be addressed:
Theory and research
- Effects of drugs and alcohol on the foetus, the neonate and the child
- The effects of substance misuse on bonding, attachment and development
- The effects of drug use on parenting capacity and the implications for safeguarding children
- The nature of and evidence for assessment, engagement and motivational enhancement strategies and pharmacological treatments.
- The contribution of different services in the care of the neonate, child and mother

- Engagement strategies and motivational enhancement of pregnant drug users
- Motivational enhancement of pregnant drug users

Opportunities for Formative Feedback
1 x group oral presentation of 10 minutes (formative assessment) to be given at one of the seminar sessions; this is not compulsory as it does not contribute to the overall grade. Feedback is provided after the seminar from the tutor and debate is encouraged within the students group.Tutorials are provided to monitor progress and understanding of the course contents.
