Module summary
This module builds on the Introduction to Addiction Studies module by exploring theories of drug and alcohol use, misuse and dependence, explanations for the contribution of various factors in increasing the severity of consequences and examining methods of monitoring the extent of use and problems.Objectives
The objectives of this module are to provide an understanding of how alcohol and drugs work, which factors contribute to the different patterns of use in individuals and how population level use is measured.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
- demonstrate knowledge of the factors influencing the use and misuse of substances;
- describe the prevalence of drug use in the UK and how it is measured;
- outline factors contributing to the development of substance related problems;
- be aware of the range of definations and concepts of dependence;
- understand the contribution of pharmacological, social and psychological factors on the drug experience.

Syllabus
The following questions make up the curriculum for this module:
- Why is drug use so universal and pervasive?
- Why do societies condone the use of some drugs but not others?
- How do peoples' drug using careers begin? What accounts for different patterns of use?
- What is a drug use problem?
- What is dependence and how has our understanding of it evolved over the years?
- What do substance addictions and behavioural addictions have in common?

Being a distance learning module, the majory of student learning is through private study and independent learning, guided by a study manual which replaces lectures.
