Module summary
This module explores theories of drug and alcohol use, misuse and dependence, explanations for the contributions of various factors in increasing the severity of consequences and examines methods of monitoring the extent of use and problems.Objectives
To demonstrate knowledge of the factors influencing the use and misuse of substances, the prevalence of drug use in Britain and how it is measured, factors contributing to the development of substance related problems, definitions of dependence, the case for special group identity and the role of industry in the promotion of use of different substances.Learning outcomes
On successful completion of the Foundation module you will be able to:
- Discuss the factors that influence the development of attitudes and behaviour relating to psychoactive drug use.
- Describe the role and function of alcohol and other psychoactive drugs in different societies.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the epidemiology of psychoactive drug use in Britain.
- Demonstrate knowledge of the pharmacology of psychoactive drugs use.
- Contrast the various models employed in the understanding of the complex nature of drug taking behaviour.
- Demonstrate an advanced understanding of what is meant by drug dependence.
- Recognise commonalities across addictive behaviours.
Skills outcomes
Knowledge and critical appraisal of the literature on the prevalence and societal impacts of substance misuse.
Syllabus
- Why is drug use so universal and pervasive?
- Why do societies condone the use of some drugs but not others?
- How do people's drug using careers begin?
- What accounts for different patterns of use?
- What is the role of gender and ethnicity in determining the nature and definitions of drug use?
- What is a drug use problem?
- What is dependence and how has our understanding of it evolved over the years; what do substance addictions and behavioural addictions have in common?

Being a distance learning module, the majority of student learning is through private study and independent learning, guided by a study manual which replaces lectures.
