Module summary
This module equips students with the theory, evidence for and practice of motivational interviewing for people with addiction problems.Objectives
The aim of the module is to enable students to develop competence in motivational interviewing practice based on theory and research with people with addiction problems. Students will develop the ability to apply motivational interviewing practice in the context of delivery of treatments for different kinds of substance misuse and as part of other behavioural treatments or protocol based motivational enhancement therapy.Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, candidates should be able to:
- monitor the effectiveness of their practice using a relevant knowledge base;
- demonstrate adherence to their own professional values and to the provision of ethically sound practice;
- describe theories of motivation and motivational change;
- describe theories of behaviour and behavioural change; to demonstrate the application of motivation theory to the assessment of client motivation;
- carry out an assessment of motivational stage of change with a client;
- demonstrate the application of the principles to the practice of motivational interviewing;
- apply motivational interviewing core skills and use feedback from assessments;
- conduct a complete motivational intervention;
- follow a manual based protocol of treatment
- describe methods of evaluating client outcomes;
- describe methods of evaluating the efficacy of interventions;
- reflect on practice, describe learning that has occurred and learning needs that have been identified;
- be aware of the range of published research material.
