Module summary

Operations management is the activity of managing the resources which produce and deliver products and services. This module introduces the topic and develops understanding of its importance within organisations, as well as how to analyse different operations across a range of sectors. Fundamental theory and practice is presented to support this, covering the primary areas of strategic operations, design, planning and control, and improvement.

Objectives

The module aims to introduce and explore the role and contribution of operations management within a range of industry settings. This will encompass the management of physical resources, including design, improvement, and planning and control.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module the student will be able to:
- Demonstrate critical knowledge of the core models and theories of operations management across different sectors
- Analyse an organisation’s operation by applying operations theories and critically evaluate the operations challenges
- Apply knowledge of the discipline to assess the strategic contribution of an operation

Skills outcomes

- To analyse different operations using a range of typologies and improvement models

Transferable skills:
- To work within a team
- To communicate effectively


Syllabus

Indicative content:
- Introduction and Strategy: The nature of operations management; systems approach; strategic role of operations
- Goods / services design: process design; network design; layout design; technology;
- Planning and Control: capacity planning; scheduling; inventory; project planning;
- Philosophies: MRP and Just In Time (JIT); quality gurus; quality planning and control; Total Quality Management (TQM);
- Performance management: improvement; performance measurement and benchmarking

Private study

- 44 hours: 4 hours reading per lecture

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students receive feedback and their progress is monitored by themselves and tutor on an ongoing basis, eg class discussion and student presentations during seminars focused on case studies.
