Participants must have opportunity to undertake a practice-based project to investigate a learning and teaching topic during their period of registration on this module.

Module summary
The aim of this module is to enable participants to undertake a practice-based project on a learning and teaching topic area that is of relevance to them.Objectives
The aim of this module is to provide participants with an opportunity to study an area of learning and teaching practice that is of professional and personal interest to them and of concern to their own school or faculty and to enable them to critically reflect on, evaluate and develop their own professional practice.Learning outcomes
At the end of the module, participants will be better able to:
- identify an area of learning and teaching practice that is of professional and personal interest and/or is of concern to their own school or faculty;
- plan, execute and evaluate a study of the learning and teaching topic identified, employing appropriate methodologies;
- demonstrate awareness of key theoretical perspectives within their agreed learning and teaching topic and place their area of concern within the broader perspective of the experience of other institutions and/or the national/local situation
- contribute to the development of policy or practice through the reporting and sharing of outcomes
- reflect critically upon their own learning and teaching practice, identify developmental needs and formulate plans for appropriate continuing professional development
- enhance their knowledge and understanding of higher education through awareness of and ability to evaluate relevant educational literature (both generic and subject-specific).
Knowledge Outcomes
Participants work should take account of the core knowledge and understanding as expressed by UK Professional Standards Framework for Teaching and Supporting Learning in HE:
1. The subject material
2. Appropriate methods for teaching and learning in the subject area and at the level of the academic programme
3. How students learn, both generally and in the subject
4. The use of appropriate learning technologies
5. Methods for evaluating the effectiveness of teaching
6. The implications of quality assurance and enhancement for professional practice

Syllabus
The module syllabus will be structured around a participant-defined project.
The negotiated topic should normally be able to mapped on to two or more areas of activity within the UK Professional Standards Framework for Teaching and Supporting Learning in HE:
1. Design and planning of learning activities and/or programmes of study
2. Teaching and/or supporting student learning
3. Assessment and giving feedback to learners
4. Developing effective environments and student support and guidance
5. Integration of scholarship, research and professional activities with teaching and supporting learning
6. Evaluation of practice and continuing professional development
