Module summary
This module introduces participants to how criminal law operates within the English Legal System. The module introduces participants to the court structure and how laws are created, before covering a range of offences (focusing in particular on those committed against the person).Objectives
By the end of the module students will be able to:- competently and independently recognise, identify and state (verbally and in writing) basic legal concepts and rules of criminal law;
- apply appropriate terminology and legal reasoning to produce a coherent legal account of an issue of limited complexity relating to criminal law;
- interpret criminal law information and data to provide a basic insight into the operation of the criminal law and system and their relationship to relevant social and political contexts.
Learning outcomes
By the end of this module students will have a basic understanding of how the English legal system operates and of key criminal offences and defences.

Students will prepare for lectures and seminars by engaging in subject-specific reading and answering essay/problem questions in advance of each class.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Students will have an opportunity to complete a short formative assessment in semester one. Fortnightly (highly interactive) seminars, for which registers will be taken, will also provide the module team with the opportunity to assess the students' understanding of each topic. Finally, students will receive support through four face-to-face lectures and there will be online support offered through the ‘flipped’ delivery of lectures on this module.Methods of assessment

The module is assessed via two assessed essays. These will challenge students to evaluate the law within it’s political and social context, as well as highlighting links between this module and the broader criminology curriculum.
