Module summary
This module allows you to observe, and contribute to, the practical application of theories, ideas and techniques introduced on the course, and provides a foundation for independence in lifelong learning and employability.Objectives
This module aims to foster the development, through experience in a working environment, of transferable personal, academic and professional skills.Learning outcomes
By the end of the module students will have knowledge of:
1. the basic concepts, information and techniques which are standard features of their work situation;
2. the techniques of data and information gathering which apply to their work situation;
3. the professional and vocational boundaries appropriate to their work situation, and the professional skills required to be an effective practitioner;
4. their personal strengths and weaknesses in supporting learning in the workplace and the opportunities for personal and professional development.
Skills outcomes
1. Design and implement a work-based learning project
2. Demonstrate organisational and time management skills as well as the ability effectively to exercise personal responsibility in relation to project management;
3. Apply generic and subject specific intellectual qualities to their work situation
4. Appreciate and appropriately employ the main methods of enquiry in learning support in their work situation
5. Use some techniques, appropriate to their work situation, to initiate and undertake the analysis of data and information
6. Effectively communicate information, arguments and analysis, and critical reflection.
Syllabus
1. Negotiation of a learning contract with their academic supervisor, which will identify the learning outcomes, the range of knowledge and skills which will be gained from the learning project, and the activity undertaken in the workplace.
2. Mechanisms and structures will be in place to support ongoing learning in the workplace using traditional and online methods, eg email and weekly logs.
3. The students' work role & their organisations' strategic direction or priorities will act as a focus for the project.
4. The processes and outcomes of the work-based learning project and the associated assessment processes and outcome of that learning will be documented in appropriate and agreed forms.
