Module summary
There is an expanding culture of research in general dental practice. Practice-based research affords the opportunity for practitioners to be part of a practice-based clinical research network; such networks enhance the professional working lives of dentists as well as their clinical skills. The preparation of a research dissertation provides practical experience in independent research which gives a solid foundation for further research in your own practice. Students will undertake an individual project and so deepen their understanding of the philosophy of research, methodology, ethics and ethical approval and good practice. They may gain experience of working within research groups, with clinical and non-clinical colleagues. Skills will be enhanced in literature searching, data management, interpretation and the critical appraisal of published research. We will provide some insight into the processes of applying for the funding of research and of project planning. There will be opportunities for students to develop their experience of the presentation of data in both written and oral formats. Objectives
This module has been designed specifically to support General Dental Practitioners in undertaking research in general dental practice. It will bring to life the knowledge and skills gained in the Research Methodology and Ethics and Statistical Methods modules with the acumen of the general dental practitioner. The student will develop useful skills in presentation and writing.

Private study
Students will use their private study time to maintain and update their knowledge of the relevant contemporary literature, maintain their research site-file including proper records of their results, and to gain the expertise needed to analysze and interpret their data. Students will prepare for an oral presentation, which will be delivered, informally, to their peers during a seminar session (this is formative). Private study time will then be used to write a dissertation of up to 10000 words and prepare for a formal oral examination.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
Progress is monitored throughout the project in regular meetings with supervisors (a minimum of 8 throughout the year). Students are also expected to present their research to peers and academics at research group meetings. At the start of the year, the students will present the research proposal prepared in their research methodology module, including justification of resources; this will be a formative assessment and will allow the department to assess the availability of resources.
The literature review submitted as part of the Research Methodology module will have been assessed by their supervisor(s) using agreed and transparent criteria.
Students will be assessed formatively by their supervisors for their diligence and the execution of their research throughout the project.
Final assessment will be through submission of a research dissertation.
