Pre-requisite qualifications

Open to Doctors (GMC registered), Physiotherapists (Health and Care Professions Council / Chartered Society of Physiotherapy), Sports Therapists or Sports Trainers (British Association of Sport Rehabilitators and Trainers). We may consider Sport & Exercise Science graduates with suitable PG experience, or those holding a relevant S&C qualification (MSc or National Strength and Conditioning Association / UK Strength and Conditioning Association accreditation).

Module summary

This module builds on the ability to recognise and treat both acute and chronic MSK conditions covered in companion modules. Key aspects of management will be explored, and develop effective MSK practitioner skills.

Objectives

On completion of the module, students will be able to:
1. Understand the medical requirements required at a sporting event and club both on competition days as well as out of competition;
2. Develop sufficient skills to enable effective practice;
3. Appreciate advice around doping given to athletes, and recognise the role of the SEM practitioner in the process;
4. Consider the ethical issues surrounding SEM practice.

Learning outcomes
On completion of the module students should have provided evidence of being able to:
L1. Demonstrate an awareness of and ability to manage the implications of ethical dilemmas and work pro-actively with others in the MDT to formulate solutions whilst strictly adhering to professional codes of conduct in musculoskeletal medicine;
L2. Demonstrate an understanding of the connections between the key disciplines that underpin musculoskeletal medicine;
L3. Demonstrate a critical understanding of the fundamentals of rehabilitation based on key MSK principles.
L4. Demonstrate critical awareness of contemporary issues and be able to synthesise information relevant to the practice of musculoskeletal medicine;
L5. Demonstrate a level of conceptual understanding that will allow her/ him to evaluate research and methodologies, and argue alternative approaches to the assessment and treatment of patients.

Skills outcomes
Anatomical knowledge, physiotherapy practice, evaluation and management of common conditions, basics of MSK practitioner skills.

Viewing online resources and presentations, portfolio preparation, reading appropriate for personal knowledge gaps in addition to specified course material, completing course workbook following guidance.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

A member of the academic or clinical teaching staff will be allocated as tutor to the group, and will meet with students every 3 weeks to assess progress, discuss issues arising, and set objectives for the next study period.
