Objectives
The student should gain an understanding of the integrative role of Strategic Management, its concepts, its research and its theories; The student will also be provided with the analytical frameworks, the skills and tools to identify central issues and problems in complex business situations, suggest alternative courses of action and present well supported recommendations for future action; and the student should be able to demonstrate an understanding of the differing and often conflicting theories, approaches and views which reflect the richness of debate within the field, by developing the analytical, decision-making and evaluative/critical thinking skills for dealing with the complex conceptual problems faced by top managers.Syllabus
Outline, introduction and basic concepts;
The strategic context: environment; configuration; purpose and preferences; Theories of strategic success; Business Strategy and Competitive Advantage; Corporate Strategy and diversification, internationalisation and entry strategies; Why firms fail and strategies for turnaround; and The strategy process: Critique of the rational approach to strategic planning and contemporary issues.

This module will provide students with formative feedback on the more novel aspects of the module's assessment regime, i.e. on multiple choice questions and the group project. In addition to the formal methods of delivering feedback, informal feedback is provided by students self-assessment and evaluation of the discussion and contribution to each case study class session.
