Module summary

This module will provide advanced knowledge and practice on research in design. It will review current thinking on design research and examine a range of research methods (such as questionnaires, interviews, focus groups, observations, and experiments) with practical design applications. Students will acquire skills and techniques for data collection and interpretation. Upon completing this module, students should be able to independently plan and apply research to explore design ideas, design issues and evaluate creative solutions to inform and enhance design practice. Social and ethical issues will be discussed using case studies at different stages throughout the module. This module builds on the teaching provided in the programme’s foundation modules and should be undertaken following carousel one.

Objectives

This module gives students the opportunity to:

1. Learn a range of common research methods at an advanced level.

2. Discover data collection and analysis methods in developing design projects through case studies.

3. Learn about social and ethical issues in research.

4. Reflect on the application of research via design research projects.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students will be able to:

1. Identify appropriate research methods for a specific design research purpose.

2. Propose research plans to address the application of research methods to design projects and ethical considerations.

3. Collect, interpret and analyse data to generate new knowledge and support a design project.

Private study

Independent online learning (12 hours):
Online learning materials provide links to appropriate journal papers, books, videos and websites. Students need to plan their own time to study these instructional and supporting materials independently before and after synchronised sessions.

To gain confidence to develop and articulate their own ideas, students will engage in private study (120 hours):
Literature search and reading: 24 hours
Independent research: 36 hours
Preparation and evaluation of assessed work: 60 hours

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Online learning materials will provide regular opportunities for students to check their understanding (for example, through formative MCQs with automated feedback). Regular group activity embedded into learning will allow self and peer assessment, providing opportunities for formative feedback from peers and tutors.

Weekly discussion forums allow students to share their work in progress and receive comments and suggestions. On week 3 and 6, students will receive additional formative feedback during the webinars regarding common issues discussed in the forums.

Assignment 1: A 600-900 words project plan, introducing the design problem, the chosen methods, the plan for data collection and analysis, ethical considerations and how findings will be used to inform design decisions. Assignment 2: A 1500-2000 words report summarising the data collection, analyses, findings, discussion, and implementations.
