Module summary
Advanced topics in chemistry option for students studying MSc in chemical biology and drug design who have previously graduated with a BSc in Medicinal Chemistry from University of LeedsObjectives
On completion of the module, students will have an advanced level understanding of a selected topics of chemistry to the most advanced level, including to key aspects of the medicinal chemistry process and the pharmaceutical industry.They will be able to demonstrate their knowledge and synthesis of multiple areas simultaneously and be able to explain and solve problems of an advanced nature.
Ultimately the module will prepare them for research either in academia or industry by providing the students with the core basis of advanced knowledge they will require. Through the continual assessment aspects of the module they will receive training in transferrable skills that will aid their future career.
Learning outcomes
The students will have a broad understanding of core areas of advanced chemistry and be able to solve problem-led questions in these areas.
They will also be able to access the primary literature and use their knowledge to make a critical evaluation of this information.
Syllabus
Students will be required to study 1 compulsory and 2 free choice topics from a selection of topics. Understanding will be assessed by a portfolio of work, based on continuous assessment of 3 of these topics. The exact topics may vary year by year but a provisional list includes:
Compulsory:
- Drug Discovery Hit Validation
Optional:
- Energy transduction – powering the Earth, life and society
- Sustainability
- Structural control in modern materials
- Physical organic chemistry
- Delivery of functional fluids
- Synthetic planning and strategies in organic synthesis
NB coursework topics offered in CHEM5608M are not available for CHEM5603M and vice versa

For the compulsory topic shared with CHEM5105M:8 hours - reading for lectures and workshops
32 hours reading research literature and preparation for oral presentations and coursework essay
For the optional topics shared with CHEM5600M:
Lecture material 20 x 1 hr will be delivered as online recordings to enable the students maximum flexibility to take this module alongside other compulsory modules in their timetables. Where the material is also provided as live lectures in the CHEM5600 module, students will also be able to attend these classes if their timetable allows.
Students will be presented with a wide range of advanced material and will be expected to spend considerable time consolidating this knowledge: 80 hours reading research literature and preparation of coursework assignments
