Module summary
Beginners Spanish 10 credits is for students who have not previously studied Spanish. The emphasis is on achieving a basic level of communication in speaking, listening, reading and writing and an introduction to Spanish/Latin American culture. You may want to learn a new language, you may already have an interest in Spain/Latin America or you may be planning to travel - whatever your reason, this module will equip you with some practical language skills and intercultural awareness. Please be aware that if you are interested in progressing to elementary level, you should take a 20-credit module in beginners Spanish.Objectives
This module aims to introduce students to Spanish and gradually develop their ability to function at beginners' level. Students should develop a basic understanding of everyday vocabulary, understand the rules of pronunciation and have a basic grasp of the relevant grammar for that level. They should also develop an awareness of Spanish and Latin American culture.Learning outcomes
On completion of the module, students should be able to:
- demonstrate an understanding of, and the ability to use, commonly used vocabulary and everyday expressions in the topics covered
- extract accurately key information from audio material
- understand and make themselves understood by a proficient language speaker in specific contexts
- demonstrate some awareness of cultural and linguistic differences between the use of Spanish and English
- demonstrate a basic knowledge of grammar including the present tense, prepositions, adjectives, formation of the negative.
Syllabus
Will cover topics such as:
- Exchange personal information about themselves, their family, their interests.
- Understand and use numbers, the time, dates, currency and prices
- Understand and give simple descriptions of a person, a person's character, a city, an area
- Talk about likes and dislikes
- Talk about daily routine
- Understanding and giving simple directions
- Talk about leisure activities.

Guided independent study each week including homework; review of the lesson; preparation and practice for the assessment and the final exam.Opportunities for Formative Feedback
