Module summary
This module aims to take students rapidly from about A1-level standard to about A2-level standard in the use and understanding of written and spoken Portuguese. By the end of this module students will possess sufficient Portuguese to survive in everyday situations in Portuguese-speaking countries in any of the four continents where the language is spoken, and they will demonstrate an ability to produce, read, understand and translate spoken and written Portuguese in a variety of everyday contexts. The module is taught via four weekly language classes including two grammar/ writing skills-based classes, using a booklet especially devised by our language tutors, and two oral/ vocabulary classes with a native speaker of Portuguese. Students will study grammar both formally and through a close reading of a range of texts supplied by the tutors on the culture and history of Portugal, Brazil and Portuguese-speaking Africa. Students with interests in continental and Brazilian Portuguese are equally welcome.Students with prior knowledge of Portuguese should consider SPPO1083: Intermediate Portuguese or SPPO1084 Intermediate Portuguese (Semester 1 only).Those who do well in both SPPO1080 and SPPO1081 can, depending on their programme, apply to change to Joint Honours Portuguese in Level 2. By the end of this module students will possess sufficient Portuguese to survive in everyday situations in Portuguese-speaking countries in any of the four continents where the language is spoken, and they will demonstrate an ability to produce, read, understand and translate spoken and written Portuguese in a variety of everyday contexts. The principal grammatical structures of the language will be covered, and vocabulary will be built up in key areas of everyday communication.In addition, the module aims to introduce students to the history and culture of the Portuguese-speaking world. The language components covered in the first half of the module will be further developed in this second half. Upon completion of this module students will be able to express themselves fluently and accurately in both Portuguese and English.

Syllabus
This module, intended to consolidate what was covered in SPPO1080 Portuguese Language for Beginners 1A, will:
a) complete the study of the basic rules of Portuguese grammar, introducing all the verb tenses of the indicative and introducing more advanced verbal constructions.
b) expand students' vocabulary range in a variety of lexical fields.
c) give further practice in reading Portuguese.
d) give further practice in the comprehension of spoken Portuguese.
e) give further practice in Portuguese conversation in everyday situations

The resit for any written component of this module will take the form of a 1 hour exam. The resit for any oral component will comprise a skype or campus-based 10 minute oral exam .
