Module summary

This modules in an introduction to mathematics and statistical tools that are required to understand economics and business. It is intended to provide both an introduction to these tools for students with a less quantitative background and a refresher for those looking to enhance their existing understanding of fundamental mathematical methods.PLEASE NOTE: This module is NOT available to any students on single or joint honours programmes in Mathematics.

Objectives

This module aims to provide students with an introduction to core skills in the areas of mathematics and statistics that are fundamental to other taught topics undertaken as part of Leeds University Business School (LUBS) courses. It introduces the basic mathematical and statistical tools that are pre-requisites for understanding economics and business.

Learning outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to:
- understand the fundamental techniques of mathematics and statistics associated with economics and business
- use and apply the techniques to economics and business examples

Skills outcomes
Upon completion of this module students will be able to :

- begin to apply logic to solve problems

- begin to utilise mathematics and statistics as tools to solve problems in economics and business

Indicative content:
Algebra and functions;
One Variable Calculus;
Logarithms and exponentials;
Inequality and limits;
Introduction to probability; and
Data and descriptive statistics.
