Objectives


Module objectives are : Students should be able to:
- Construct ceramic-metal bonded single units, polymeric-metal single units, full ceramic and full polymeric single units. Demonstrate an understanding of the abrasives, polishing agents and surface treatments methods used to finish dental alloys ceramic and polymeric.
- Be aware of the use of dental implants as an option for the replacement of single missing teeth.
- Understand and apply health and safety practices including the safe working practices required when constructing appliances and when disposing of dental biomaterial.
- Explain the application of quality assurance measures for these appliances
- Participate with other members of the dental team in determining patient treatment plans for simple Fixed Prosthodontic appliances.
- Understand the terminology, abbreviations and the range of materials used in the construction of Fixed Prosthodontic technology.
- Recognise the clinical preparation that is required prior to the commencement of laboratory work.
- Demonstrate the ability to communicate with other members of the Dental Team to ensure timely and safe completion of the treatment plan.
- Assist the clinician in the determination of the shade of the ceramic or polymeric material to be used for crown replication.
- Recognise and understand prescription requirements for Fixed Prosthodontics and organise and manage the production schedule for a range of prescription requests.
- Demonstrate an understanding of the processes required for the selection of suitable materials, manipulation techniques and uses of alloys including the analysis, and quality assurance.
- Identify the range of human teeth, including anatomical coronal/root features related to human tooth form and understand how they can be replicated in artificial materials.
- Carve a variety of natural teeth in wax.
- Recognise a variety of articulator and understand their limitations in reproducing the movements of the Temporal Mandibular Joint.
- Articulate registrations of occlusion on a range of articulators.
- Recognise and demonstrate the range of manufacturing methods including refractory materials available. Describing their uses, properties, and methods of manipulation techniques required to fabricate single unit Fixed prosthodontics.
- Understand the principles and procedures of the lost wax technique.
- Identify and understand the range and associated design requirements for glass, ceramic type materials. Discuss both their properties and manipulation in relation to, bonded metal ceramic crowns.

Syllabus

This module further develops the student’s interaction with other members of the dental team.
It is an introduction to the design and production of single unit Fixed Restorations using a variety of commonly used techniques, construction methods and materials.
It gives the student an understanding of the biomaterials used to construct dental appliances building on information gained in Introductory Dental Biomaterials
The student will develop an understanding of the prescription and treatment plan requirements for the effective treatment of patients with single missing or damaged teeth, including a basic guide to implants.
They will gain basic skills to design and produce a range of fixed single unit appliances including metallic/ceramic, metallic polymeric, full ceramic and full polymeric.
They will recognise the range of glass, ceramic and composite materials available for the construction of dental crown and bridges and veneers.
They will develop their knowledge of the lost wax technique and will gain the underpinning knowledge to allow them to put this technique into practice.
The module gives the student the underpinning knowledge of natural tooth morphology to allow them to gain insight into recreating these natural forms from artificial materials.
It delivers the necessary health and safety information and quality measures understanding cost implications required when choosing suitable materials for the production of these dental appliances.
The module ensures the student is knowledgeable in the safe handling and disposal of dental materials.

Pre reading required to prepare for each lecture. Expected further reading of each topic to enhance knowledge. Students are asked to present small topics in groups for seminars. Information research time enhances knowledge of both the practical and theoretical knowledge

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

There are 2 formative assessments, an essay of 75 words and a poster presentation. The titles are given at the beginning of semester 1 to allow the students to research the topics. The dates for submission are staggered to ensure that there is no conflict with other modules.
