Objectives
Module objectives are, students should be able to:* Describe current national and international trends in the delivery of dental care.
* Describe the professional, legal and ethical obligations of Dental Healthcare Professionals.
* Explain and understand the roles of the members of the Dental Team and recognise the necessity of teamwork during the treatment of patients.
* Be aware of the criteria required and the regulations involved in statutory registration with the General Dental Council
* Understand the principles of patient care and management.
* Be familiar with the place of Dentistry in the provision of healthcare and be familiar with the work of other healthcare workers
* Undertake basic First Aid training and CPR.
* Behave in a professional manner and demonstrate positive working relationships and communication links with other members of the Dental Team.
* Recognise the need to follow a written treatment plan and understand prescription terminology
* Interpret prescriptions and treatment plans and be aware of the procedures for clarifying information or referring back to source.
* Identify current legislation relevant to Dental Technology
* Apply safe working practices when involved in dental laboratory work and understand the necessity for personal occupational healthcare.
* Understand the principles of disinfection and infection control measures.
* Explain the application of quality assurance in the dental laboratory and the need for dental audits and clinical governance in the provision of dental healthcare.
* Understand the ethical guidelines required and the medico/legal consequences involved in the provision of Medical Devices.
* Understand the requirements for the storage of data and records within the Dental Laboratory and demonstrate the ability to complete these records.
* Identify professional bodies that can give assistance, advice and support during the technicians practicing life.
* Be aware of the need for Continuing Personal and Professional Development throughout their practicing life.
* Use IT and library services to research and present information.

Syllabus
This module introduces the student to the provision of Dental Healthcare and identifies the need for teamwork in the provision of that healthcare. It encourages professional behaviour and gives an awareness of ethical issues involved in the treatment of patients.
This module develops awareness to legislation involved in the provision of Dental Healthcare e.g. Dentists Act, COSHH, Health and Safety at Work Act, MDD.
The student will learn the importance of quality assurance and clinical governance and be given the opportunity to work with other members of the Dental Team to develop working relationships and improve communication skills.
The module encourages them to improve their performance and professional standards by becoming involved in Continuing Personal Development which will enhance their future professional life. It gives them an introduction to the use of IT and a presentation skill required in Dental Technology and provides them with the ability to record and store data.

Students are required to complete online e lectures and associated suggested reading. First Aid and CPR training sessions require further reading. Students are required to take pictures of their coursework; store pictures on a memory stick, at the end of each academic year transfer the pictures to a CD for permanent storage.
