Applicants should normally possess a honours degree in a relevant discipline, or a medical degree, and be actively involved in education in primary care.

Objectives

On completion of this module, students should have gained the knowledge, skills and understanding to:
- critically evaluate learning and assessment methods;
- demonstrate expertise in the skills required for learning, teaching and supervision.

Learning outcomes
On completion of this module students should be able to:
1. design and critically evaluate methods to assess the learning that has taken place;
2. demonstrate an understanding of models of adult developmental learning and how learning affects learners;
3. facilitate groups of learners and demonstrate understanding of group dynamics;
4. demonstrate expertise in the communication skills required for teaching.

Skills outcomes
Students will be able to advance and critically reflect upon existing inter-personal skills to manage effective learning and comprehensive assessment and to critically appraise the responsibilities and boundaries of their role in supporting learning, teaching and assessment.

Syllabus

1. Assessment of learning - methods of assessment, validity, reliability and fairness, how assessment affects learning.
2. Development and change - how learning affects the learner, theories of developmental learning, adult learners, educational practice related to philosophical stance.
3. How to teach - theory and practice of effective teaching methods, uses of one-to-one teaching, explaining, questioning, feedback.
4. Learning in groups - group dynamics, skills of group facilitators, skills teaching with video prompted feedback.
