Module summary

This module integrates the vital elemets of mastication, swallowing and speech, in both health and disease. The anatomical structures and physiological processes are covered, including the neurological control of speech and swallowing. The functional anatomy of the temperomandibular joint and muscles involved in mastication are then revisited Temperomandibular Joint Syndrome is highlighted and the full range of treatments for this condition discussed. Practical experience of providing a stabililistion splint is then provided The patient's perspective of the above conditions and on treatments options available will be considered throughout the course as will the role of the healthcare team in providing this treatment.

Objectives

- Have knowledge of the anatomy, neuroanatomy, physiology, neurophysiology of the processes involved in, mastication, swallowing and speech.
- Recognise and be able to evaluate diagnostic features of the disorders associated with these processes and have an understanding of the rationale for treatment.
- Have knowledge of the congenital and aquired defects of the mandible , maxillae and temperomandibular joint.
- Have an appreciation of the effects of these disorders of the patients quality of life.
- Have knowledge of the types of treatments available for temperomandibular joint disfuctions (TMD), including splint therapy, surgery and adjunctive treatments.

- Functional anatomy of the temporomandibular joint.
- Diagnosis of the various conditions affecting mastication, swallowing and speech.
- Practical experience of providing a stabililistion splint .
