Module summary
This module aims to teach the diagnosis and management of common dental diseases. It relates pathological processes & host responses to radiographic and clinical findings. This leads on to diagnosis and planning of appropriate preventive and operative treatment, and an appreciation of occlusion. The module will teach basic dental materials science and its application to clinical practice.Students will learn basic operative skills including instrument control, cavity design and manipulation of dental materials. They will be introduced to the management of pulpal & apical disease and the techniques for simple root-canal treatment.Information literacy & an introduction to the scientific method will be incorporated into the production of a simple project based on an experiment and related literature review. The module emphasizes awareness of hazards and the adoption of safe working practices. Objectives
To teach the scientific basis of, and the practical skills and knowledge involved in :• the prevention, assessment and management of caries, occlusion, marginal periodontitis, tooth wear, pulpal disease and periradicular disease
• the promotion of an oral environment in which restoration of teeth is viable
• minimally invasive restorative procedures that promote health and that maintain or restore the structure, function and appearance of the teeth and of the periodontal and periradicular tissues
Learning outcomes
On completion of this module, students should be able to:
• Relate dental health and diseases and concomitant histological, chemical and biochemical processes to clinical findings and the results of special investigations
• Apply an understanding of basic sciences to the diagnosis and management of dental diseases and the use of dental materials
• Demonstrate safe progression of core skills in simple clinical procedures, the control of rotary & hand instruments, and the manipulation of dental materials
• Demonstrate skills in reading critically and in scientific writing
Skills outcomes
To be able to:
• give preventive advice
• recognise the carious lesion and understand its development
• select the most appropriate methods for management of the carious lesion
• safely handle the instruments and materials used in operative dentistry
• control and coordinate the use of hand & rotary instruments and dental materials during dental treatment
Syllabus
The module comprises:
• The lecture programme
• The directed reading, e-learning & e-practical programme
• The clinical skills laboratory programme and accompanying tutorials

The student is expected to dedicate 3 to 4 hours of private study for each hour of didactic activity including tutorial, project and practical work.
Opportunities for Formative Feedback
During the clinical skills sessions the students are directly observed and formatively assessed. The student log book is used each session for student self-assessment of practical skills, followed by the tutor’s assessment with individual feedback. The students compile a journal article which is peer reviewed (student and staff) and electronically published.
Progressional assessment in the form of the log book and practical coursework are a prerequisite to enable students to treat live patients.
A formative oral exam with immediate verbal feedback is conducted at the mid-point of the module
Summative assessment is by written examinations and spotter tests.
