Module summary

This extensive and demanding course builds upon the very basic clinical skills introduced in year 1. Integration with other courses in the second year will encourage the development of a holistic, evidence-based and professional approach to patient care. Complex practical skills will be introduced and developed in the clinical skills laboratory in preparation for the treatment of real patients.Achievement of consistently high standards is an essential pre-requisite for the transition to intervention on patients with irrevocable clinical procedures; great emphasis will be placed on progression of demonstrated skill and the quality of result achieved, in part through engagement with self-assessment. The management of dental caries and simple endodontic treatment in the permanent and the deciduous dentition will be central to the process and attention will be given to the importance of biocompatibility in relation to the selection of restorative materials and restoration design, incorporating occlusal and periodontal considerations. There will be time available for those who need extra practice to reach the desired minimum level. The course lays the ndation for more advanced clinical skills courses which will take place in later years.
