Objectives

Module objectives are: students should be:
* Working in a Dental Laboratory, in their chosen specialist field, on actual patient cases
* Working within the remit of a Dental Technician as determined by the GDC.
* Behaving in a professional manner.
* Interpreting prescriptions and producing the appropriate laboratory work required.
* Liaising with other members of the Dental Team and their co-workers to ensure satisfactory outcomes for patient treatment plans
* Choosing suitable materials and methods to construct required appliances
* Completing all relevant paperwork for the casework produced and completing all records required satisfying MDD regulations.
* Undertaking health and safety requirements to protect their own health and that of others
* Participating in all legal and quality assurance requirements for the production of these appliances
* Producing a variety of partial denture cases in acrylic and metal/acrylic materials for all jaw relationships.
* Including a variety of wrought metallic components in partial acrylic dentures
* Undertaking a range of repairs and modifications to partial dentures
* Completing all relevant paperwork for the casework produced and completing all records required satisfying MDD regulations.
* Undertaking health and safety requirements to protect their own health and that of others
* Participating in all legal and quality assurance requirements for the production of these appliances
* Producing a range of multi unit restorations including metal/ceramic, metal/ composite, full ceramic and full composite designs.
* Producing complex diagnostic wax ups for multi unit restorations
* Producing temporary multi unit restorations.
* Articulating registrations of occlusion on a range of articulators

Syllabus

This module allows the student to develop their hand skills and their knowledge of procedures and techniques in a real work situation and reinforces and develops skills learned in Fixed Prosthodontics Simple and Removable Complete Prosthodontics and Removable Orthodontics.
It allows the student to experience the reality of working in a dental laboratory, specifically in relation to the production of a range of multi unit Fixed Prosthodontic appliances, removable partial dentures and fixed and functional orthodontic appliances.
The student will be expected to become competent, within the workplace, in their chosen specialist field of Dental Technology.
The Module will cover all health and safety and quality issues to complete these work based tasks and give an overview of the planning required to successfully produce dental appliances to a deadline.
It will include record keeping and working with other members of the Dental Team.

Opportunities for Formative Feedback

Students will have a training log which will be completed by the student during each work experience session. This will be countersigned by their workplace supervisor and their personal tutor.
