Module summary
The third course in clinical practice and outreach is related closely to the new skills gained in the Clinical Skills B course. These comprise history-taking, examination, investigations, diagnosis, treatment planning and treatment in relation to more complex endodontic problems, restoration of the root-filled tooth, failing restorations and the issue of unrestorability, simple tooth extraction, options for and treatment of the edentulous saddle (both fixed and removable methods). Issues of consent and referral will be discussed. Consolidation of clinical practice will be in relation to periodontology and periodontics (scaling and root debridement, powered and manual) and decision-making in relation to non-operative care for the individual patient presenting with caries, periodontal diseases and tooth wear. Issues in relation to anti-microbial therapy will be considered, together with continued practise of a range of operative procedures covered in Clinical Skills A and clinical practice 2.Radiology and radiography will continue to be integrated into students' learning.Objectives
On completion of this module, students should be able to:- apply the skills gained in 'clinical skills B' to the patient situation;
- diagnose and treatment plan for more restorative complex cases, including molar endodontics and management of edentulous spaces by removable and fixed methods;
- determine that a tooth is beyond restoration;
- prepare for tooth extraction by selection of instruments, positioning of themselves and the patient and display a technique carrying minimal risk of injury to the patient;
- maintain a high level of infection control throughout all clinical procedures;
- work more effectively with chair-side assistance, acknowledging the role of the dental nurse;
